Hi, I’m Sally Siyakatshana, founder of Iconic Business Owner.

Where my story starts

I was born in Kenya and moved to Australia in 2010, hoping for a better life. Like many people who migrate, I had to start again from the beginning. My qualifications and experience didn’t travel with me, so I went back to university and completed a postgraduate degree in Accounting.

Then came the part nobody puts on a CV. I worked for free to gain local experience. It was humbling, and it taught me that opportunities often come from showing up before anyone is willing to pay you.

Eventually, I found paid work. On paper, I had made it. In reality, the hours were long, the pay was low and there was little room to grow. I kept asking myself whether this was all there was.

The pull toward building something of my own

What I really wanted was to create. I wanted to turn ideas into something real, connect with people and build something meaningful on my own terms.

So I took the leap and started my own bookkeeping business, OnPoint Bookkeeping. I had put that move off for a long time, and looking back, I wish I had made it sooner. The risk was worth it.

What nobody warned me about

Running the business was very different from the dream I had pictured. I was the marketer, the administrator, the accountant and the bookkeeper, all at once, with no one to share the load.

I was good at the work itself. What I struggled with was finding clients. Despite my best efforts, I couldn’t turn skill into a steady, sustainable income. It was one of the most humbling lessons of my career: being good at your craft and being good at running a business are two different skills.

The moment everything shifted

I stepped back and asked a harder question. Was I really the only one facing this?

I wasn’t. Once I started paying attention, I saw the same pattern everywhere:

• Business owners wearing too many hats
• Talented people who didn’t know how to find customers
• Founders who felt isolated and unsupported
• Capable people being held back by unclear money and planning

That reflection became Iconic Business Owner.

What I bring to this work

My background is in finance and accounting, and it shapes how I explain things. I believe money, planning and everyday business decisions should be clear, not intimidating. I don’t use jargon to sound impressive. I write the way I wish someone had explained things to me.

Everything on this site comes from one belief: practical business knowledge should be easy to find and easy to use, whether you’re still deciding to start or already growing.
